An Arabic version of the Canadian national anthem has been published today in order to encourage ‘civic engagement’ in new citizens. The performer is Toronto opera singer Miriam Khalil and the version was commissioned by the Canadian Arab Institute, ahead of the national holiday.

Wonder why they never made a version in Yiddish.

How can a second-hand translation be the original???

  • Skripach says:

The Canadian anthem is distinctinguished by having an official French version (the original) and an official English version, which are not translations of each other, but go off in two quite different directions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Canada#Official_lyrics). The French version has Christian imagery missing from the English version, among other things. I wonder which one was translated into Arabic for the video.

  • Theodore McGuiver says:

They never needed a Yiddish version as Jews tend to integrate…

How do they know the date of the election? It hasn’t been announced yet. At least, not in English or French.

do you know anyone in Canada who can sing ‘O CANADA’ in yiddish?

A NYTimes reporter in Canada is compiling a collection of Canadians singing the anthem in various languages there! Any idea who can do this?
