If you’re a young musician, this is the month to seize your chance.

All over the world, conductors and singers are crashing out with seasonal disorders – or worse. Riccardo Muti’s health saga in Chicago has been widely reported. Sir Colin Davis crashed to the ground in mid-Magic Flute at Covent Garden. James Levine scratched a Carnegie date. Vladimir Jurowski nixed Cleveland. Seiji Ozawa is out until August, at least.
Three singers, led by Jonas Kaufmann, called in sick before the first night of Luc Bondy’s Tosca at La Scala. Susan Graham has pulled out of IphigĂ©nie at the Met. Murray Perahia pulled out of Dublin. And so it goes….
Don’t just sit there, reading this. If you’re a young musician, call your agent now and ask for the latest cancellations. February’s the month that big careers are made.
